Saturday 5th May was another landmark day in the history of UCA SOPPEXCCA (based in Jinotega in Nicaragua). In the Great Ballroom of the Convention Centre in Long Beach California, UCA SOPPEXCCA was presented with the Sustainability Award of the SCAA (Speciality Coffee Association of America) for 2007.

Announcing the result of the SCAA’s Sustainability Committee’s deliberations, Karyn Lee-Thomas, Award Sub-Committee pointed out that within the committee there was a consensus that UCA SOPPEXCCA “sets a new standard in our industry by sustainable practices that address all eight of the United Nation’s Millennium Goals”.

Accepting the award on behalf of the cooperative, Ms. Fátima Ismael, General Manager of UCA SOPPEXCCA, thanked the Sustainability Committee of the SCAA for bestowing this honor on the cooperative. She declared that the prestigious award was recognition of the efforts of each and every member of the cooperative and the members of the different boards of management of the organization who had worked tirelessly to promote sustainable rural development in the Department of Jinotega since the establishment of UCA SOPPEXCCA in 1997.
